A Bit About Me

I’m Mary Kate Johnson, a senior at Tulane University pursuing a Bachelor of Science Management in Legal Studies in Business and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. Raised on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, I come from a close-knit community that taught me the value of connection and accountability, but also inspired me to seek broader perspectives. My academic journey has been shaped by leadership and service—serving as Student Body President, Varsity Tennis Captain, and Editor-in-Chief of my high school newspaper—and fueled by a deep curiosity about people, cultures, and systems. I was selected for Tulane’s prestigious Altman Program, which allowed me to study abroad in both Mérida, Mexico and France, sharpening my global mindset and personal independence.

These experiences deepened my passion for media, storytelling, and the power of diverse perspectives. Living in unfamiliar environments without a safety net taught me resilience, adaptability, and how to lead with authenticity. As I prepare to graduate, I’m excited by the unknown rather than intimidated by it. I’m eager to explore a career that blends strategic thinking with creative communication, grounded in a desire to build meaningful connections and continually challenge myself to grow.

Work Experience
Throughout my young adult life, I’ve held a wide range of jobs—from serving in restaurants and working as a summer camp counselor to teaching ice skating, cleaning skates, and assisting as a legal runner. While these roles weren’t directly tied to my professional field, they taught me invaluable real-world lessons about people, responsibility, and navigating the complexities of everyday life. I’m deeply grateful for these experiences, as they shaped my work ethic, adaptability, and interpersonal skills in meaningful ways. Below are a list of jobs and internships that directly developed my professional knowledge and skill set.

May 2024 - August 2024

January 2025 - May 2025

August 2025 - December 2025

Legal Intern at Davis and Hoss P.C.

I gained hands-on experience in legal research, writing, and case management. I conducted in-depth research on case law, statutes, and regulations, translating complex legal information into clear, actionable summaries that supported attorneys in shaping case strategies. I drafted a variety of legal documents—including motions, briefs, and discovery requests—while ensuring precision, adherence to deadlines, and compliance with court procedures. Additionally, I managed case files, organized evidence, prepared exhibits, and coordinated depositions and client meetings. This role sharpened my analytical thinking, attention to detail, time management, and ability to work collaboratively under pressure within a professional legal environment.

Podcast Host and Journalism Intern at Radio Esprit Occitane

I developed and produced podcast episodes focused on U.S. political issues, tailoring content to resonate with an international French audience. Through thoughtful research and inclusive storytelling, I engaged listeners by presenting a range of diverse perspectives from U.S. residents, conducting interviews that encouraged dialogue and critical thinking. In addition to hosting, I supported the station’s editorial goals by researching and writing compelling stories, contributing to content planning, and strengthening my skills in cross-cultural communication, media production, and digital storytelling.

Marketing and Writing Intern at Where Y'at Magazine

I was selected for a Summer internship with Where Y’at Magazine, a New Orleans-based publication known for championing local culture and community awareness. I’ve chosen to defer the role until Fall 2025 in order to spend time with my family after a year abroad in France. During my internship, I will be writing articles focused on New Orleans history and culture. I plan to immerse myself in the city’s vibrant life by attending cultural festivities, protests, and community events—gathering first-hand interviews with local residents to enrich my reporting with authentic voices and experiences.
